How a screen printed shirt gets made
What happens in the film
- Artwork. The art file is separated into one layer per ink color. This eagle design uses seven: a white base, yellow, orange, blue, cream, tan and black.
- Film. Each layer prints on its own clear film positive, with registration marks so every color lines up.
- Screen. A mesh screen is coated with emulsion, the film is laid on and exposed to light, and the design washes out into a stencil. Every ink color gets its own screen.
- Press. On a black shirt, the white base prints first and is flash cured, then each color prints one at a time on a carousel press. The shirt runs through a conveyor dryer and is heat pressed to finish.
- Box. The shirts are counted, folded by the dozen and boxed.

We mix your Pantone in the shop
Screens are burned in-house, plastisol is mixed to your PMS numbers, and every piece is printed and cured in the shop, so the first shirt off the platen matches the last one in the box.
Sample Pantone Solid Coated colors, including 123 C, 1235 C, Orange 021 C, 1788 C, 185 C, 234 C, 266 C, 2758 C, 286 C, 2925 C, Cool Gray 7 C and Black 6 C.
We offer Pantone color matching; the Pantone numbers* need to be provided for us to match a color.
*Send Pantone Solid Coated numbers, the ones ending in C (like 185 C). Textile numbers ending in TCX or TPX (like 19-1664 TCX) are Pantone's fabric-dye system, not ink, and don't match what we mix.
What's the minimum order?
Twelve pieces per design. You can mix sizes freely inside that, and mix garment colors as long as the ink colors stay the same.
How long does an order take?
Two to three weeks from the day your invoice is paid; that's what books the job on the press. If you're up against an event date, tell us early and we'll be straight with you about whether it's doable.
What does it actually cost?
Two numbers: the blank garment and the printing, which comes off our published rate card. Every price on the site already includes both, and there are no setup fees or screen fees on top.
What file should I send?
Vector is ideal: AI, EPS or a PDF with the text converted to curves. A high-resolution PNG at print size works too. We'll do the press prep: cleanup, resizing and color separations.
We don't design artwork from scratch, but we'll tell you honestly whether what you have will print well.
Do I need Pantone numbers?
For color matching, yes. We mix ink to PMS numbers on site, and the numbers need to be provided for us to match a color; we can't match from a photo or a hex code.
Does white ink cost extra on dark shirts?
No. The white underbase that makes colors pop on a dark garment is included free, and it never counts as one of your ink colors.
Where do you ship?
Anywhere. UPS Ground is free anywhere in Virginia; outside the state we'll quote the freight with your order. Orders ship folded by the dozen, counted and boxed, with tracking.
